The Punch List
The final list of remaining items. If the list is long, the project was not as done as it looked.
Overview
The punch list is the list of small, specific items remaining before a build is considered complete. It is generated during the final walkthrough and closed only when every item is resolved. Its software equivalent is the pre-release bug list, or — for the more organized — a "launch blockers" column on a kanban board.[1]
What Goes on It
- The cabinet door that doesn't close fully
- The paint drip on the baseboard by the bedroom
- The outlet that's loose
- The caulk line that wanders
- The trim joint that shows a gap
- The grout that's uneven in one tile
Each item should be specific, testable, and assignable. "Finish kitchen" is not a punch list item. "Reseat the upper-right cabinet door; swing clears countertop by >1/8"" is.
Principles
- The punch list is the last list, not the first. If it's long, scope control failed earlier.
- Don't hand over until the list is empty. Handing over with 12 items remaining is not handing over. It's delegating.
- Write them down the moment you see them. The items you hold in memory are the items you forget.
- Close each item with evidence. A photo. A signature. A checkmark next to a specific line.
"The punch list is a mirror. It tells you the truth about your process." — Burbridge
