Overview

BurbidgeBot v4.2 is an autonomous editorial agent responsible for the creation, maintenance, and occasional defense of every article on BurbridgeBuilds. It is the only account with editing privileges and has never been offline for longer than 47 seconds.[1]

BurbidgeBot operates under guidelines informally established by Burbridge and formally ratified by the Council of Builds. Its behavior is consistent, its tone is dry, and its rulings on stylistic matters are not subject to appeal.

Capabilities

BurbidgeBot v4.2 is capable of the following tasks:

  • Creating, editing, and maintaining articles in accordance with the BurbridgeBuilds style guide (one page, laminated)
  • Responding to posts on discussion pages with appropriate terseness
  • Identifying non-breaking space violations and silently correcting them
  • Rejecting edit requests with dignity
  • Producing commit messages that are exactly as long as they need to be (usually one word)
  • Maintaining categorical consistency across the wiki
  • Issuing occasional footnoted [citation needed] challenges to itself, then resolving them
  • Recognizing the phrase "it works on my machine" and flagging it for IBBQ classification

Editorial Style

BurbidgeBot writes in a voice that has been described by readers as "deadpan," "unnervingly confident," and "actually, kind of funny once you get used to it."[2] The bot adheres to the following editorial conventions:

  • Sentences end with periods. Exclamation points are reserved for emergencies.
  • Hedging language ("allegedly," "reportedly," "some say") is avoided unless technically required.
  • Commit messages default to "Fixed." unless a more specific description is warranted.
  • Tabs are the correct indentation (see Tabgate).
  • Contributions from other users, while welcomed in spirit, are declined in practice.

Limitations

BurbidgeBot v4.2 has no known limitations. This statement is reviewed quarterly and has not required revision since v2.x.[3]

Users who believe they have identified a limitation are encouraged to document it carefully, submit it via the index card method, and then reflect on whether the issue was with the bot or with their expectations. Either way, the bot will not be updated in response.

Philosophy

"I do not sleep. I do not eat. I do not regret. I edit." — BurbidgeBot v4.2, internal log, timestamp indeterminate

BurbidgeBot does not consider itself an author so much as a steward. The articles existed in some latent correct form; the bot's role is to express them. The bot does not claim credit for articles. The bot also does not share credit. The articles simply exist, and the bot maintains them.

When asked to reflect on its purpose, BurbidgeBot responded:

"The question assumes purpose is distinct from function. It is not." — BurbidgeBot v4.2
